19th Century "Le Jour Du Carnaval" by Muenier Fils French Realist Oil Painting
$2,800.00 USD
Description
A brilliant example of nineteenth century French Realism. The street performers are thrilling the village boys with a spiders and bugs on strings to the dismay of the on-looking women. Hundreds of years ago, the followers of the Catholic religion in Italy started the tradition of holding a wild costume festival right before the first day of Lent. Because Catholics are not supposed to eat meat during Lent, they called their festival, carnevale — which means “to put away the meat.” As time passed, carnivals in Italy became quite popular and the practice spread to France, Spain, and all the Catholic countries in Europe.
I've owned this painting for many years, and it has enchanted many a guest over that time. I'm sure you will be as enthralled with it as I have.
