Our Lady of Sorrows 18th Century Oil on Canvas of the Madonna
$865.00 USD
Description
Our Lady of Sorrows (Latin: Beata Maria Virgo Perdolens), Our Lady of Dolours, the Sorrowful Mother or Mother of Sorrows (Latin: Mater Dolorosa), and Our Lady of Piety, Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows or Our Lady of the Seven Dolours are names by which the Virgin Mary is referred to in relation to sorrows in her life. As Mater Dolorosa, it is also a key subject for Marian art in the Catholic Church.
This 17th-18th century work is a beautiful rendition of this powerful theme in the manner of Carlo Dolci. Please look at the photos carefully. There are some minor losses along the edge and a small scratch on Mary's bodice just below her neck. The painting has not been cleaned in over a hundred years. The dark splotches are the old varnish. Some collectors prefer to leave the old varnish as a patina fitting the age of the piece. If the buyer prefers to brighten the painting up, a restorer could easily remove the old varnish and recover with a modern clear version. There is some oxidation to the frame. Note the old Colorado Springs art gallery label on the back. S.T. Seddon was in business at least as early as 1896.
Oil on canvas laid down on board, 17" x 14 1/2" Outside frame dimensions 22" x 19".
