St. Mark's Square, Venice 1950s Watercolor by Betty Kathe
$495.00 USD
Description
This has long been my favorite watercolor. I'm downsizing and selling things I thought I never would. One of the reasons this is my favorite is that Venice is to me the most fabulous man-made place on earth. With canals for streets, it is so romantic and it's amazing that it even exists. It is truly a magical city.
St. Marks Square is so full of history it is hard to describe. I have seen 16th century paintings of this very view, and in them you can see that the columns holding St. Theodore and the winged lion (St. Mark's symbol) were old even then.
The picture shows the people enjoying themselves in the piazza and the frame is beautiful, reminiscent of the sort of fresco decorations of Pompeii, another enchanting place to visit in Italy.
Betty Kathe was a distinguished artist born in England in 1896. She spent most of her life in America. The Brooklyn Society of Artists awarded her the Distinctive Merit in Watercolor at the 34th Annual Exhibit of the Society, November 5, 1950 which is around the date this picture was painted.
