Description
The French invented landscape painting. Prior to the seventeenth century, nearly all painting was either religious in nature or portraiture. Along with Salvator Rosa, Dughet was considered one of the two most important landscape painters of his day. He studied under his brother-in-law Nicolas Poussin, arguably the greatest French landscapist of all time. Dughet’s paintings hang in too many museums to mention, but a short list would include the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Hermitage in Leningrad, and the National Gallery of London.
This is a splendid example of Dughet’s best work. The attribution to Dughet was made by Christies Old Master department in the 1990s.
